Watch: Waltloo substation fire sparks major power outages in Tshwane

A fire at the Waltloo Substation has caused widespread power outages, with restoration efforts underway.

A fire at the Waltloo Substation in Tshwane early this morning caused widespread power outages across multiple areas, with restoration timelines unknown as assessments continue.

Pretoria Rekord reports that according to Tshwane Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, some areas in Tshwane are without electricity following a fire at the 132kv Waltloo Substation.

“The Waltloo Transformer 1B caught fire just after midnight. This incident led to power trips to the supply areas of the Rooiwal, Pyramid, Phumulani, Waltloo and Koedoespoort substations, which are currently experiencing power outages.”

He says the City’s Emergency Services Department responded promptly to douse the fire, which has been extinguished.

“The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. A team of technicians, which has been dispatched to the scene, is currently conducting the assessment.”

He says resients will be kept abreast of the developments.
