Western Cape: Hlompho Mohapi’s suspects denied bail
Magistrate Phillip Mgwebile said the three are a danger to society and the state has a constitutional duty to protect society.
The 3 suspects in the murder of Hlompho Mohapi, were denied bail, George Herald reports.
The suspects – Melisizwe Monqo, his fiancée Siphosihle Pamba and co-accused Phumlani Qusheka – appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court this morning, Friday 31 August.
Magistrate Phillip Mgwebile said that, based on the evidence brought in court, the three can’t be trusted that they won’t intimidate witnesses, that they may interfere with the investigation of the case and that they are likely to be a flight risk.
Mgwebile also said that the three are a danger to society and the state has a constitutional duty to protect society.
He said that the interest of the public in this case, and the petitions the community submitted in court for the three not to be granted bail, also contributed to his decision.
The case was postponed to Tuesday 30 October for further investigation.
