Police have dealt a major blow to the illicit drug trade following the seizure of an estimated R1.3 million worth of mandrax tablets during a raid in Lawaaikamp, Conville, reports George Herald.

Members of the Conville Crime Prevention Unit, assisted by the Outeniqua K9 Unit, acted on information received and executed a search warrant at a house in Ptsholo Street at about 15:00 yesterday afternoon, (5 August).

Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said officers discovered a box bearing the logo of a courier company containing packets of mandrax tablets during the search. 

They also searched a non-functioning chest freezer on the property, where they found additional plastic bags filled with mandrax tablets.

In total, police confiscated 26 000 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R1.3 million.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs. He is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on Friday 7 August.

The investigation has been taken over by the Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit. Police believe the drugs were destined for distribution in the region.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Sizakhele Dyantyi commended the officers involved for removing such a large quantity of drugs from the streets.
