Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire in the Heidelberg area in the Western Cape.

South Cape Forum reports that the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) says the fire is still active and uncontrolled, though all nearby structures were successfully protected overnight.

The blaze’s northern flank is burning up the mountain, remaining inaccessible to ground crews.

Authorities report that the area contains dense, alien invasive vegetation, up to 25 years old, which is intensifying the fire.

Ground teams are mopping up near infrastructure and suppressing flare-ups along the south-westerly fire line.

Some parts of the fire burnt out naturally along Duiwenhoks Dam, helping to contain the spread.

In addition to protecting homes and buildings, crews have also prioritised nearby cellphone towers and orchards. A helicopter is on standby for critical aerial support if required.

Responders on scene include the GRDM Fire and Rescue Services, the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association, CapeNature, Working on Fire and local landowners.
