Why all South Coast beaches are closed and when they might reopen

All South Coast beaches are closed due to safety concerns, reports South Coast Herald.

According to Nomusa Zulu, the acting spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, heavy rains inland and along the coast have caused rivers to flood.

“This fresh water entering the sea brings with it an abundance of dead fish, animal carcasses and more for the scavenging species of sharks to prey upon, thus elevating the risk of bathing at these times,” she says.

Zulu adds that a large easterly swell generated offshore has been running consistently for about a week, creating strong currents along the shoreline, especially in bays.

“These currents have caused the safety nets to become unstable and loose due to the strength of the swell,” she says.

In areas near river mouths, floating debris and trees have damaged nets.

Zulu says weather and sea conditions are expected to improve before the weekend, allowing limited beaches to reopen for bathing. However, she emphasises that this remains dependent on sea conditions.
