Witchcraft myths blamed for deadly attacks on KZN elderly

Misunderstandings about mental health and lingering witchcraft superstitions are fueling tragic attacks on elderly community members.

A lack of mental health education and persistent witchcraft superstitions are believed to be driving a series of killings targeting the elderly.

In the most recent attack, four people from two families living just 100m apart in Mbuba, Matimatolo, near Greytown, were shot and killed. The victims included three women, aged 70, 60, and 33, as well as a six-year-old child.

Local Inkosi Mpendulo Cele linked the attack to witchcraft accusations. In an earlier case, three people received life sentences for murder and an additional five years for arson after they assaulted and set alight 65-year-old Fikile Msimango and her daughter Nkosi (28), also due to witchcraft claims.
