Witnesses sought after Durban pensioner is killed for R100

Police are appealing to residents who may have witnessed the murder of a 71-year-old man from Shallcross, to come forward.

Despite Human Rights Day looming, residents of South Africa still face violent atrocities on a daily basis. One such incident occurred yesterday when a well-known pensioner from Shallcross, Durban, was stabbed to death over R100.

Video footage of the violent incident circulated across social media platforms, showing the suspect following the elderly man as he approached a pathway.

The suspect is then seen following the man down the pathway before he fights and violently stabs the man. He then robs him and flees the scene.

The victim is then seen getting up off the ground in an attempt to get back to his home, but he only takes a few steps before falling to the ground and succumbing to his wounds.

Chatsworth SAPS communications officer Captain Cheryl Pillay says police are appealing to residents who may have witnessed the murder to come forward.

“It is alleged that on Monday, March 18, at about 09:00, a 71-year-old pensioner was walking along a pathway near Cathedral Street when he was accosted by an unknown man who fatally stabbed him. The suspect then fled from the crime scene. With investigations intensified, police are working around the clock to bring the perpetrator to book,” she adds.

Shallcross CPF chairperson Vishal Lachman, on behalf of the local CPF, conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

“We appeal to the community to always be aware of their surroundings. Please keep a safe distance when walking and if possible, walk in groups. Trust no one on the street,” warned Lachman.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crime is urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Singh on 031 451 4245. Alternatively, contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
