A woman (25) was arrested in Bekkersdal near Westonaria, Gauteng for allegedly trying to sell live ammunition on the street and more ammunition and a gun were allegedly found at her house after community members confronted her.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane says the community was gathering at a forum to discuss community issues on Thursday at 16:00, when they were informed that a woman carrying a plastic bag was busy selling live ammunition.

“The group cornered the woman and upon searching her, they allegedly found live ammunition inside the bag. When asked about the ammunition she said it belonged to her boyfriend.

At her house more ammunition, a firearm, rubber bullets, security handcuffs and an ammunition belt were found and seized,” says Lefakane.

It is alleged that over 100 rounds of live ammunition were confiscated.

Lefakane says attempts by police to trace the boyfriend were without success. Investigations are underway.

The Bekkersdal Police Station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela praised the community and further appreciated the fact that they did not take matters into their own hands as they handed the suspect to the police without harming her.

“This is a sign of a good working relationship. Working together we can do more,” says Matamela.

The woman, who is a Lesotho national, was arrested and will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property and for the contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 after she failed to provide documentation to prove she is in the country legally.

She is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon.
