Woman and granddaughter killed after their vehicle gets a flat tyre at Umdloti, N2

The family's car was rear-ended by another vehicle while parked on the N2 with a flat tyre.

A 2-year-old girl has died shortly after arriving at hospital, following the horrific car accident that killed the child’s grandmother at Umdloti on Wednesday.

The child’s grandparents were travelling along the N2 when their car got a flat tyre in the middle lane at the Umdloti off-ramp.

The grandmother reportedly got out of the car clutching her daughter when an on-coming vehicle collided into the both of them, rear-ending the broken down car.

The grandmother was killed and her granddaughter was flung several metres away, out of her arms.

“According to the deceased’s husband, they were forced to stop on the third lane after the Jeep Grand Cherokee they were travelling in had a puncture.

“They got out of the vehicle and were in the process of changing the tyre when a Land Rover collided into the vehicle before running over his wife,” said Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram.

Emergency medical teams placed the injured child on a ventilator before taking her to hospital.

The grandfather and driver of the Land Rover escaped unharmed.
