Woman critically burnt after igniting fire in confined space

A woman suffered extensive burns after igniting a fire in a confined space in Lions River, requiring urgent aeromedical transport to a trauma hospital.

A woman was found with extensive burns after igniting a fire in a confined space in Lions River, KZN, this morning.

The Witness reports the Midlands EMS Advanced Life Support paramedics, along with Midlands EMS K9 Rescue Medics and a local ambulance service, were dispatched to the area following reports of a person suffering severe burns.

Upon arrival, emergency crews found a critically injured woman with burns across her body.

Midlands EMS operations director Roland Robertson says the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear and will be investigated by the relevant authorities.

“Given the severity of the patient’s condition, Midlands EMS paramedics initiated immediate advanced life support treatment to stabilize the individual,” he adds.

“Due to the extensive nature of the burns and the need for urgent specialised care, an aeromedical helicopter from Netcare 911 was activated.”

The helicopter landed at a secure landing zone nearby, where the patient was handed over to the flight crew for transport to a Level 1 trauma hospital.

“Our thoughts are with the patient, and we urge the public to exercise extreme caution when handling open flames, especially in enclosed spaces, to prevent such tragic accidents.”
