Woman jumps from moving e-hailing car in KZN to escape alleged kidnapping

A woman, fearing for her safety when her e-hailing driver locked the doors and drove past her destination, jumped from the vehicle.

A woman jumped from a moving e-hailing vehicle to escape an alleged kidnapping or robbery in Inanda, KZN, in the early hours of Saturday.

According to an article published by The Witness, Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), says the woman, an employee at a Durban-based restaurant, had requested a ride via an e-hailing app after her shift.

However, her driver deviated from the intended route, locking the doors and driving past her destination in KwaMashu.

Fearing for her safety, Balram says the woman unlocked the door and jumped from the moving Suzuki Dzire as it travelled along Sigora Road in Inanda.

“She fled to a nearby property, where she [hid] and contacted her boyfriend for help.”

Balram says the woman’s boyfriend contacted Rusa for assistance, fearing that the driver might return and kidnap her.

“Reaction officers promptly responded to the scene, locating the woman at approximately 03:51. Although visibly traumatised, she did not sustain any injuries.”

Balram says the e-hailing vehicle was not found despite a search of the area.

He adds that the woman was transported to the Vela SAPS in Inanda to report the incident.

This is not an isolated incident. In January, The Witness reported on a similar incident where a 22-year-old Northdale woman, Zhanay Joseph, alleged she was physically assaulted and verbally abused by an intoxicated e-hailing taxi driver.

The driver reportedly drove recklessly, refusing to drop her off at her destination, and eventually forced her out of the vehicle. Joseph reported the incident to the police and the e-hailing service, which apologised and took internal measures against the driver.
