Woman killed in Edenvale shooting identified

A 58-year-old Meadowdale resident has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting last week.

A family is in mourning, and a community has been left in shock after an incident in Dunvegan Avenue in Edenvale on June 10, where a woman was shot in the head after she resisted her attackers who tried to pull her into a vehicle.

Ekurhuleni District police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed the shooting at 75 Dunvegan Avenue claimed the life of Meadowdale resident Chantel Smith (58), reports Bedford Edenvale News.

The incident saw stakeholders from across the area mobilise as SAPS, private security and emergency services descended on the scene.

Sekgobela said it is believed that the shooting was the result of a botched hijacking.

“When they [law enforcement] arrived at the scene, they were directed to the body of a 58-year-old woman lying on the ground in the parking lot in front of business along the avenue.”

“Through observation, first responders noticed a gunshot wound on the upper body,” said Sekgobela.

Sekgobela said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was going to a nearby pharmacy when she was approached by two suspects, one armed with a firearm.

She said the suspects tried to pull Smith into a vehicle.

“The deceased resisted, which is when she was shot in the head by one of the suspects,” said Sekgobela.

Edenvale CPF chairperson Sheryl Damerell described the shooting as ‘a tragic incident’.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.

“When something like this happens, it hurts, and it ripples through the community. The behaviour exhibited here by these suspects is absolutely abhorrent,” said Damerell.

She said that while she could not comment on the number of suspects, a lookout had been circulated for the vehicle believed to have been linked to the crime.

She appealed to the community to be always vigilant and aware and to report any suspicious behaviour.

Anyone who may have information related to the crime is urged to report it and provide it to the police on 10111 or 086 001 0111.
