Woman out on bail after hanging dog from tree

A 36-year-old woman has been released on bail after she hanged a crossbreed dog from a tree in Gabalatsane, north of Pretoria.

SPCA inspector Meshack Matlou said a resident saw the woman hanging the 5-month-old dog and raised the alarm, Rekord North reported.

“We rushed to the scene, and unfortunately the dog was dead when we arrived at the scene,” Matlou said.

The woman tied the dog on a rope and left it to die.

“We found her in a calm mood, doing laundry at her home like nothing happened. We then called police and the woman was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals,” Matlou added.

“The suspects appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates’ Court and was released on bail. She is not denying the charges,” Matlou said.

“She said in a statement, her child loved to play with the dog, and liked kissing it. She had feared her boy would pick up diseases from playing with the dog,” Matlou said.

Early this month, two dogs were found hanging from a tree in Driefontein, Ladysmith, in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged community members who were passing by spotted the dogs and alerted the AACL staff. The animals were reportedly hanged.

Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) officer Annamarie Koen said when she and her team arrived at the scene, they found the two dead crossbreed dogs hanging from a tree. It appeared the dogs were left to slowly suffocate.

In June, a 40-year-old man allegedly killed his dog by hanging it from a tree in Temba, north of Pretoria.

The Tshwane SPCA inspector Meshack Matlou said the man alleged the dog had eaten some of his chickens. He then hanged it from a tree at about 11pm.
