Woman shot and killed outside bar near Springs

Matebogo Magooa was hit in the forehead while another man sustained flesh wounds.

A 38-year-old woman was shot and killed outside Bahama Lifestyle in Kwa-Thema near Springs, in the early hours of Sunday morning, allegedly after she intervened in a fight between her cousin and her boyfriend.

It is alleged Matebogo Magooa was in the company of her cousin waiting for their transport home after they asked one of the patrons to drop them off.

As they were about to leave, a man, who is said to be the boyfriend of the cousin, approached the car they were in and demanded to speak to his girlfriend.

Matebogo allegedly intervened to defend her cousin and the man walked back to his car. The driver who was giving the women a ride home, also allegedly pleaded with him to calm down.

It is alleged that the man suddenly took out a gun and opened fire on the car the women were in, hitting Matebogo in the forehead. The driver sustained flesh wounds to his arm and lower body.

Matebogo was rushed to the Far East Hospital where she was certified dead.

Kwa-Thema police spokesperson Sergeant Nkululeko Magudulela says the man handed himself over to the police on Sunday afternoon.

“He is facing charges of murder and attempted murder and investigations are still underway.

“The suspect will appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon,” he says.
