Woman’s body found in vehicle during KZN roadblock

A murder case is being investigated after a woman's body was found in the back of a bakkie that had two occupants.

Two suspects were arrested on Friday night, during a roadblock by metro police on the M41 near La Lucia Ridge, after a woman’s body was found in the back of the vehicle they were travelling in.

The body was found in the back of the bakkie.

“The vehicle was stopped on the M41 by metro police officials during a stop-and-search roadblock. The driver started to become jittery and attempted to flee from law enforcement and the scene, and officials gave chase,” Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu says.

“Upon a thorough investigation and search of the vehicle, a human body was discovered. Medics were called to the scene and confirmed that the person was dead. The two suspects have been detained at the Durban North SAPS station for further investigations.”

It is understood that a case of murder has been opened.

Public relations officer for the Durban North CPF Darryl Oliver, who was also at the scene, confirms the woman’s body was covered with bags and cardboard in the back of the suspects’ vehicle.

“The driver of the vehicle fled the scene with some of our CPF members giving chase. The suspect fled into a nearby office park, by which time Durban Metro Police and SAPS members had joined our members in the chase. The suspect, who was found hiding in the office block, was apprehended a short while later by Durban Metro police and was escorted back to his vehicle.

“Durban North CPF, metro and SAPS members conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and found a human body which had been covered with cardboard and bags containing clothing and blankets. We would like to commend our members, as well as the law enforcement officers, for their swift response and decisive actions resulting in the apprehension of the suspects,” Oliver adds.

Police also made 16 arrests at the same roadblock, reportedly for drunk driving.
