Worker killed as wall collapses at grocery store in Meyerton
One worker died and another was injured when a wall collapsed during renovations at a store in Loch Street, prompting a safety investigation.
A construction incident at the Pick n Pay Centre in Loch Street in Meyerton claimed the life of one contract worker and left another slightly injured early this morning.
Vaalweekblad reports that according to Meyerton police spokesperson Constable Nompumelelo Zazini, the incident occurred around 05:00. Three workers were breaking down a wall in a barricaded renovation area at the back of the store when the wall collapsed.
Josephy Kampheni, a Malawian national, was struck and died at the scene. Another worker, Tashu Alimony Tinashe, a Zimbabwean national, suffered minor injuries to his right leg and arm and was transported to Mediclinic Vereeniging for observation. A third worker was unharmed.
The Pick n Pay store has been temporarily closed while authorities ensure the building is safe. The scene has been cordoned off, and Midvaal Building Control will declare the site safe before further investigation continues.
Officials on site included representatives from Midvaal Disaster Management and Sedibeng SAPS. Senior authorities, including Major General Samuel Thine and Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, were notified.
Police are awaiting the project manager’s permission to fully inspect the site before finalising the investigation.
