WP Nel revved up for Stormers reunion

The South African has become a legend at the Scottish club Edinburgh which he joined in 2012.

SA-born Scotland international WP Nel is champing at the bit for a chance to face fellow veteran prop Brok Harris when the DHL Stormers and Edinburgh clash on Saturday.

The Stormers host Edinburgh at Cape Town Stadium when the Vodacom URC resumes in round 12, with John Dobson’s charges in ninth place on the standings while the Scottish visitors are fourth.

Nel joined Edinburgh from the Cheetahs in 2012, and the tighthead prop cemented his cult-like status from the get-go with a 40m solo try against Leinster.

Now, 12 years later Nel is gearing up to join another special club this weekend when he takes to the field in the shadow of Table Mountain – joining just two other double-centurions – Chris Paterson and Allan Jacobsen – when he takes to the field at DHL Stadium this weekend.

It’s a fitting location for a special appearance given the 37-year-old’s professional journey started in Cape Town at Western Province in 2008.

“My wife’s family lives quite close to Cape Town so on the off days we’ll make time to go and see them,” Nel told Edinburgh’s official website.

“There could be a chance I see Brok Harris on Saturday too. When I played U20s he was there [at WP] and just breaking through to the Stormers.

“We go back quite a while. We were quite good friends, and it would be awesome to go against him – two old men who would just take each other on.”

“It’s special. Not everyone gets to play 200 games,” he added. “I wouldn’t have thought I’d play 100 games, so to play 200 is special. To do it here in Cape Town would be awesome.”
