Year-long hunt traps allege KZN diesel thief

A transport department probe has exposed an insider who allegedly drained R300 000 worth of diesel every month.

An investigation into the theft of diesel, which started last year, has finally borne fruit after a KZN transport department employee in Empangeni was arrested, reports Zululand Observer.

The worker, who is employed in the mechanical division, is allegedly linked to a fuel-theft syndicate stealing more than R300,000 worth of diesel a month.

The department said the arrest is part of an ongoing investigation to root out criminal activity.

“We salute our honest transport officers and our specialised security team of investigators for working diligently with the SAPS to ensure the arrest of this dishonest employee,” said MEC Siboniso Duma. “We will do the same with many others, including security personnel and members of syndicates who are being investigated. There are other civil servants in various government departments under the radar, including those who are abusing state vehicles.”

Shortage of diesel

Duma said many critical road construction and maintenance projects across the province had collapsed because of diesel shortages caused by the criminal syndicate. He warned that there would be severe consequences for those involved in the abuse of state vehicles and state assets.

“We reported months ago about a R177m road rehabilitation project underway in Bergville, under the Okhahlamba Local Municipality,” said Duma. “A contractor was robbed of 300 of diesel by gun-wielding members of the construction mafia. Last week, we published a statement following the arrest of three criminals in connection with the theft of 43 pieces of heavy construction equipment.”
