New Lexus GX hints at what the next Prado could look like

The redesigned GX establishes itself as a 'sophisticated utility vehicle' building on its two decades in the SUV segment.

Lexus has just unveiled the all-new GX SUV, representing a significant departure from its predecessor.

With a strikingly aggressive exterior design, the all-new GX embodies the rugged and robust character it has consistently demonstrated throughout the nameplate’s existence. Lexus designers were keen on showcasing the off-road capabilities of a true TNGA-F body-on-frame SUV, shared with the LX and Land Cruiser 300. Their vision was to provide GX customers with refined outdoor experiences, resulting in a design that seamlessly blends a tough exterior with a serene, luxurious, and contemporary interior space.

For the 2024 model year, the GX will be available in six trims: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and the all-new Overtrail and Overtrail+. Notably departing from the previous generation, the 2024 GX boasts a square-body profile characterised by a horizontal design motif. The front of the vehicle retains the Lexus spindle body concept, featuring a bold and resolute design that enhances its off-road functionality.

To achieve a grounded and stable stance, the designers developed a tightly constructed body with an expanded track and fender flares, pulling the front pillar base towards the rear. Compared to its predecessor, the overall width of the GX has increased by 3.74 inches (9.5cm) – 4.52 inches (11.4cm) for the Overtrail. The Premium Triple Beam LED headlights and grille opening have been elevated to minimise potential road impacts, while LED fog and cornering lamps enhance visibility. The front overhang has been reduced by 0.78 inches (1.9cm), resulting in improved clearance. The seamless integration of the grille and headlamps enhances the vehicle’s commanding front presence.

From the side, the 2024 GX projects a solid and powerful appearance, characterized by a horizontally flowing body and an extended wheelbase of 2.36 inches. The A-pillar has been retracted to improve visibility, complemented by a lower beltline and enhanced ground clearance. The overall length of the 2024 GX has increased by 2.75 inches (6.9cm). Notably, the Overtrail grades are equipped with 33-inch tires and 18-inch wheels for optimal off-road performance. Additionally, the rear tread has been widened by 3.26 inches (4.06 inches for the Overtrail grades).

At the rear, the GX maintains its square and aggressive stance, accentuated by the distinctive unified light bar. The updated LEXUS logo continues the Next Chapter design introduced on the 2022 NX.

Stepping inside the cabin, the GX offers a driver-focused cockpit, reminiscent of the all-new RX. Representing a significant improvement over its predecessor, the interior exhibits a more contemporary design. Lexus has incorporated a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with enhanced voice commands.

The interior upholstery options include faux or genuine leather in various colours, with Overtrail variants featuring dark green faux-suede accents. Premium and Luxury trims provide three rows of seating, accommodating up to seven individuals with the standard second-row bench. Alternatively, optional captain’s chairs can be installed, reducing the seating capacity to six. The Overtrail models exclusively feature two-row configurations, accommodating up to five occupants.

While a hybrid powertrain is anticipated to join the lineup in the future, the GX currently comes equipped with a standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V6 engine. This powertrain generates 260kW of power and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to all four wheels.

The all-new Lexus GX stands as a testament to Lexus’ commitment to luxury and off-road capability. With its aggressive exterior design, refined interior, and capable performance, the 2024 GX represents a compelling choice for discerning customers seeking a sophisticated utility vehicle.
