In May 2024, Jaguar Land Rover’s first-ever emissions-free Range Rover was put through a rigorous global test regime, spanning the freezing Arctic Circle to the scorching Middle East. The British marque recently announced that the model has entered a pivotal development phase, with prototypes undergoing hot-weather testing in the UAE.

With temperatures exceeding 50°C and humidity levels up to 90%, the SUV’s new thermal-management system faced its ultimate test. According to the company, the Range Rover Electric delivered ‘impressive’ thermal efficiency, surpassing the brand’s previous sand-based performance benchmarks. “Defying all limitations, exemplary thermal performance was maintained continuously throughout intensive, prolonged desert driving,” the automaker said.

In addition to thermal tests, the SUV’s ‘Intelligent Torque Management’ system was evaluated in this environment. The all-electric Range Rover successfully ascended the 300ft (91.44m) ‘Big Red’ dune five times, a feat the automaker described as being completed with ‘flying colours’.

“A hot climate is one of the most challenging for any battery electric vehicle, because of the need to cool the cabin and optimise battery performance simultaneously. The additional challenge of driving on sand requires controlled low-speed torque, so our specially developed traction control and thermal management systems work in harmony to ensure power delivery is unaffected,” said Thomas Müller, the executive director of Product Engineering.

“Our tests have shown that, in this climate, repeatedly driving the equivalent of 100 metres uphill on fine sand, [the] Range Rover Electric matches the performance of its ICE equivalents; in some instances, even surpassing them thanks to the introduction of these new features.”
