More recycled plastic in Continental tyres

PET bottles power up Continental's sustainable tyre production.

Continental is stepping up its sustainability efforts by incorporating more recycled materials into its tyre production. Several plants are now using polyester fabric made from recycled PET bottles, boosting the recycled content of many tyre lines by an average of 3%.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle – this trio is key to more sustainable tyres,” says Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability at Continental Tires. 1 “Our polyester yarn made from recycled PET bottles is just as strong as conventional yarn, proving that sustainability, performance, and safety go hand in hand.”

Continental’s innovative ContiRe.Tex technology, transforms recycled PET bottles into high-performance polyester yarn and is used in tyres produced at plants in Portugal, the Czech Republic, Germany, and France.

By 2030, Continental aims to increase the proportion of renewable and recycled materials in its tyres to over 40%. This includes using only sustainable PET for all new car and light truck tyres. Ultimately, the company’s vision is to produce tyres made entirely from sustainable materials by 2050.
