The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has issued a warning about a disturbing trend – pedestrians deliberately throwing themselves in front of vehicles to file fraudulent claims.
The RAF has warned that it will not entertain fraudulent claims resulting from staged collisions. While the focus has been on deterring pedestrians, motorists also face significant consequences, both financial and emotional.
Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, emphasises the importance of defensive driving as the primary safeguard against such incidents.
Key defensive driving techniques:
• Awareness: Maintain constant awareness of your surroundings, including other vehicles, obstacles, and pedestrians. Never be surprised by unexpected actions.
• Anticipation: Predict the actions of other road users and adjust your driving accordingly. Be extra vigilant for pedestrians who may be hiding on the roadside.
• Avoid speeding: Excessive speed reduces reaction time in emergency situations.
• Minimise distractions: Put away your phone and avoid any activity that takes your eyes off the road.
• Maintain safe following distance: This provides adequate time and space to react to unexpected events.

Additional safety tips:
• Avoid night driving: Whenever possible, limit night driving to reduce the risk of unforeseen incidents.
• Invest in a dashcam: Dashcam footage can be crucial evidence in case of a dispute or legal action.
• Never drink and drive: Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents.
• Ensure vehicle maintenance: Proper vehicle maintenance, including functioning lights, tyres, and brakes, is essential for safe driving.
• Understand ABS: Familiarise yourself with the operation of your vehicle’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) and practice emergency braking techniques.
By employing defensive driving techniques and adhering to these safety tips, motorists can significantly reduce the risk of becoming involved in these staged collisions and ensure their own safety on the road.
