Toyota defines the concept of total endurance

Toyota remains optimistic about future sales as it marks 45 consecutive years as the market leader in South Africa.

Despite a late-year boost, new vehicle sales in South Africa declined by 3% in 2024, reaching 515 712 units compared with 2023s 531 775.

While 2025 may present similar hurdles, a return to pre-pandemic sales remains possible with an improving local economy.

Leon Theron, Toyota South Africa’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, acknowledged the challenges of 2024, but expressed optimism. “Ending the year with strong sales across all major categories provides a positive outlook for 2025.”

Toyota achieved a 27.7% market share in December, its highest for the year, and sold 11 422 units. This marks 45 consecutive years as the South African market leader, with a 24.9% market share in 2024.

Toyota excelled in all key vehicle segments. In passenger sales, Toyota secured a 24% market share, with the Corolla Cross, Fortuner, and Starlet leading the way. Toyota dominated the light commercial vehicle market with a record 42.3% share, driven by the enduring popularity of the Hilux. Toyota also led in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle categories.

Beyond sales, Toyota demonstrated its commitment to excellence in parts distribution, with nearly 1.7 million pieces distributed locally and 277 045 exported.
