Finalists for South African Car of the Year 2025 titles selected

The 39th annual South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition, sponsored by Old Mutual Insure, has reached its final stage with 17 vehicles vying for the coveted titles.

The finalists represent a diverse range of vehicles, from compact hatchbacks like the Suzuki Swift to luxury sedans like the BMW 5 Series, and high-performance models like the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance.

Key categories and contenders:

  • Performance: BMW M5, Ford Mustang GT, Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance
  • Bakkies: Mitsubishi Triton, GWM P500 HEV (the first hybrid bakkie to reach the finals)
  • Luxury: BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • New Energy Vehicles: BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance, Volvo EX30, GWM P500 HEV

Intense competition ahead:

The finalists will now undergo rigorous testing at Zwartkops Raceway, where expert jurors will evaluate their performance across various criteria.

“The 2025 COTY competition has seen a significant increase in the level of competition,” says Thami Masemola, chairman of the SAGMJ. “The finalists represent the pinnacle of automotive innovation and excellence.”

Public involvement:

The public will also participate in the selection process through the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice award. Details on how to participate in the public voting will be announced soon on social media.
