Miwa launches short skills training in KwaZulu-Natal

One method of addressing the skills shortages in the country is through dynamic short course training. This is what this programme seeks to do.

The Motor Industry Workshop Association (Miwa) has recently launched a significant short skills training initiative in KwaZulu-Natal, aimed at upskilling 1 575 employed learners across South Africa.

This project, funded by merSETA with R23.5m, focuses on enhancing skills in automotive parts sales, service advising, leadership, problem-solving, basic auto electrical skills and automotive component diagnostics.

The initiative, which commenced in January 2025, is conducted in partnership with KATS Training and tailored to meet the evolving needs of Miwa member workshops.

“By investing in structured training, we’re equipping participants with the practical knowledge and expertise needed to elevate service standards within the automotive industry,” said Pieter Niemand, Miwa’s national director.

The training programme combines theoretical learning with practical application, offering learners a comprehensive educational experience. “The course was informative and well-structured, providing insights that will be invaluable in the service environment,” commented one participant.

The hybrid learning model, incorporating online modules and in-person assessments, provides flexibility and ensures learners gain firsthand experience.

The training in KZN will continue throughout February, covering essential modules such as automotive diagnostics and parts sales.

This initiative demonstrates Miwa’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce and driving the growth of the South African automotive sector.
