Gavin Walton favourite for seventh DJ Rally victory

The 53rd annual iTOO VVC DJ (Durban-Johannesburg) Rally, a highlight for classic motorcycle enthusiasts, kicks off on March 14.

The annual 53rd DJ Rally is about to inspire many classic motorcycle owners and enthusiasts. The event starts in Durban on March 14 and finishes in Johannesburg.

Gavin Walton, from Springs, is the strong favourite to secure his seventh victory in this prestigious classic motorcycle rally. Walton’s past wins (2009, 2017-2019, 2022 and 2024) and impressive performance in the Pre-DJ Rally solidify his position.

Event details

• The DJ Rally commemorates the historic road race between Durban and Johannesburg from 1913 to 1936.

• This year 76 motorcycles and two sidecar combinations will compete.

• The event is open to all motorcycles manufactured before 1936.

• The rally starts in Hillcrest, outside Durban, at 06:00 on Friday, March 14.

• The route follows the historic R103 road, with overnight stops in Newcastle and refuelling points on route.

• The finish line is at the Benoni Northern Sports Club and the first competitor is expected around 14:00.

Competitors

• Nine first-time riders will participate, including Lloyd Weber from Zimbabwe and Michael Buchan, the youngest rider at 21.

• Neville Smith, aged 89, is the oldest rider participating in this event.

• Five women riders and two sidecar combinations will compete.

• Only three previous DJ winners are in the field: Gavin Walton, Mike Ward (2004, 2023) and Adrian Hollis (2000).

Walton’s dominance

• Walton has been competing in the DJ Rally since 2005.

• He rides a 1936 AJS Model 9.

• Despite a serious accident in 2013, he continued to compete, showcasing his dedication.

Other notable competitors

• Jaycee van Rooyen, from a motorcycle racing family, will ride a 1929 Sunbeam.

• Mark Palmer will ride the 1936 Royal Enfield his father used to win the inaugural DJ Commemorative Regularity Rally in 1970.

The 2025 DJ Rally is organised by Gauteng motorcycle club members on behalf of the Vintage and Veteran Club of South Africa.
