Alfa’s hybrid Junior derivative employs clever Q4 AWD system
Alfa Romeo Junior line-up has received 30 000 orders globally already and now the Italian automaker has divulged some of the tech that makes its Q4 all-wheel drive derivative tick.
The core of the Alfa Romeo Junior line-up’s Q4 system lies in its intelligent ‘Power Looping Technology’ which allows the car to maintain all-wheel drive functionality even at low battery levels. The Q4 system’s operation is integrated with Alfa Romeo’s DNA drive mode selector.

In ‘Natural’ and ‘Advanced Efficiency’ modes, the car prioritises front-wheel drive for optimal fuel efficiency but seamlessly engages the rear axle when needed. This ensures stability and traction without compromising efficiency, operating primarily in FWD up to 90km/h.
“If ‘Dynamic’ driving mode is selected, Q4 all-wheel drive optimises performance to ensure maximum traction and responsiveness,” explains Alfa Romeo. From 0 to 40km/h, the system operates in full AWD, then transitions to FWD at higher speeds to minimise energy loss.
The ‘Q4’ mode maintains AWD up to 30km/h for maximum low-speed traction, transitioning to ‘SMART Q4’ which keeps the rear motor active for quicker engagement when needed. This dynamic adjustment ensures a balance between performance and efficiency, maintaining AWD responsiveness up to 90km/h.

“The all-wheel drive is functional to the DNA and is always active thanks to Power Looping Technology,” Alfa Romeo states, highlighting the system’s integration with the car’s driving dynamics. The Junior Ibrida Q4 features a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine combined with two electric motors, delivering a total output of 107kW.
One motor is integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch transmission on the front axle, while the second powers the rear axle. This setup ensures optimal torque distribution and traction in all conditions.
To enhance ride comfort and handling, the Junior Q4 debuts MultiLink independent rear suspension on this platform. “This advanced suspension system provides an increased ability to absorb unevenness in the ground, ensuring superior comfort for all occupants and excellent handling,” Alfa Romeo notes.
