Long weekend road trip? Essential car safety checks
Prepare your vehicle and tyres for the long and winding roads ahead to ensure a safe Easter journey.

The Easter holidays bring increased traffic and a higher risk of accidents on South African roads. Before embarking on your journey, ensuring your vehicle and tyres are roadworthy is paramount for a safe and smooth trip.
Tyres are a critical safety component, acting as the sole contact point between your car and the road. Their condition directly impacts handling, braking, and overall safety in all weather, regardless of your vehicle’s age or technology.
Planning and responsible driving are equally vital. Impatience, recklessness, and driver fatigue are major contributors to road accidents. Sadly, the UK sees a significant number of road fatalities annually.
Continental Tyres is committed to enhancing road safety by developing high-performance tyres with exceptional grip, especially in wet conditions. They also actively promote road safety awareness and education.
Continental’s essential road safety tips for your easter break:
· Tyre condition: Regularly inspect your tyres for cuts, cracks, bulges, or damage from potholes and debris.
· Tyre pressure: Maintain correct tyre pressures, checking them at least every two weeks when the tyres are cold. Under-inflation affects handling and fuel efficiency, leading to overheating and failure. Over-inflation reduces grip and increases centre wear. Adjust pressures for laden conditions.
· Spare tyre/mobility kit: Check the condition and pressure of your spare tyre. If you have a mobility kit, ensure it’s in working order.

· Towing considerations: If you tow a caravan or trailer, inspect its tyres and adjust pressures accordingly. Tyres on infrequently used towed vehicles can degrade over time.
· Tread depth: The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm. However, wet grip and braking are significantly reduced below 3 mm. Replace tyres before reaching the legal limit.
· Vehicle check-up: Conduct an all-around technical check of your car and trailer/caravan. Examine oil and coolant levels, brakes, battery, lights, wipers, and shock absorbers. Consider a professional service.
· Avoid driver fatigue: Take a break every two hours on long journeys. If tired, stop in a safe place to rest – arriving late is better than not arriving at all.
· Pedestrian awareness: Be vigilant for pedestrians, especially at night. Pedestrians should wear bright or reflective clothing for better visibility.
· Breakdown safety: If your vehicle breaks down, pull over safely and place a warning triangle at least 50 metres behind. Exercise extreme caution when working on your car at the roadside.
· Responsible driving: Avoid using mobile phones while driving, as it causes significant distraction. Never drink and drive. Patience and consideration for other road users contribute to a safer journey.
