Volvo: 98 years of safety and innovation in motoring
Celebrating 98 years, Volvo's legacy of safety and continuous technological advancement drives its commitment to a sustainable future in the SA automotive sector.
Volvo is celebrating its 98th anniversary, a testament to a century of automotive excellence, pioneering technology, and a strong commitment to sustainable mobility, particularly within South Africa’s growing electric vehicle market.
From its Swedish beginnings in 1927 with the ÖV4, Volvo quickly established a reputation for durable and safe vehicles, famously patenting the lifesaving three-point seat belt in 1959 and waiving the rights for industry-wide adoption. This single innovation by Nils Bohlin is estimated to have saved over one million lives.
Volvo’s commitment to safety continued with innovations like booster cushions, SIPS, and side impact airbags, BLIS, and pedestrian detection with automatic braking, culminating in the advanced safety systems of its latest EVs like the EX90.

Beyond safety, Volvo has also produced iconic vehicles such as the P1800, Amazon, 850 T5-R, and the original XC90.
Felipe Yagi, head of marketing and communications at Volvo Car SA, stated: “Reflecting on 98 years of progress, we are proud of our heritage and excited about the future. Our focus on innovation and sustainability remains our driving force, inspiring models like the EX30, new EX90, and upcoming ES90 to set new standards.”
Sustainability is increasingly central to Volvo’s vision. Beyond its growing range of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, the company is committed to using more recycled and eco-friendly materials. The EX90, for example, incorporates significant amounts of recycled plastics, bio-based materials, steel, and aluminium. Looking beyond their centenary in 2027, Volvo aims for 90-100% of its global sales to be electrified vehicles.

Volvo continues to build on its legacy of safety and innovation with a clear focus on sustainability, driving advancements in electrification to shape the future of SA mobility. The company remains dedicated to delivering safer and more sustainable solutions within the evolving automotive landscape.
