Volvo Cars was at the forefront of committing to go fully electric and planned to have no reliance on new ICE powertrains by 2030. Over the course of the past few years and owing to a variety of reasons, they have now shied away from this reality. The automaker has already launched several fully electric models, including the EX90, EX30, and EX40 but will now allow for up to 10% mild hybrid models too. One such new model will be the XC70, which has been designed initially for the Chinese market. Intended to combine the best of both worlds, the new XC70 boasts up to 200km of electric-only range, making it Volvo’s longest-range plug-in hybrid to date.

Built on the brand’s new Scalable Modular Architecture platform, the XC70 is positioned as a premium, practical alternative for buyers not yet ready to make the leap to full electrification. Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson describes the newcomer as a ‘strategic bridge’ between traditional hybrids and EVs, reflecting the company’s goal to tailor products to regional market needs.

“It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars. This is also an example of regionalisation, where we adapt to the local market needs,” says Samuelsson.

From a design perspective, the XC70 bears undeniable aesthetic hallmarks to other contemporary Volvo products. Up front is a closed, shield-style grille inspired by Volvo’s electric models. Matrix LED headlights sit beneath daytime running lights, and C-shaped tail lamps integrated into the rear glass.

The SUV’s extended electric range is complemented by fast-charging capability and a fuel-efficient combustion engine, giving owners the freedom to commute emission-free while tackling longer journeys with confidence. Inside, the XC70 offers generous space and comfort, ideal for families and long-haul travel alike.

Although initially headed to China, Volvo is evaluating global availability, and more details will follow in the coming months. The XC70 name, once associated with rugged estates, now enters a new era — one that blends innovation with a nod to adventure.
