Jaecoo J5 hybrid SA launch date confirmed
Chery sub-brand Omoda & Jaecoo has announced when the Jaecoo J5 HEV will launch in South Africa.
In November 2025, Jaecoo confirmed the J5 hybrid for the South African market. Now, following the launch of the Omoda C5 SHS HEV in April, the Chinese automaker has announced when the mechanically related new-energy J5 will arrive on our shores.
While Jaecoo has remained tight-lipped about local specifications, the firm’s local arm has mentioned that the J5 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) will feature a 13.2-inch, portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, a steering column-mounted drive selector, and advanced noise, vibration and harshness technologies, the latter including active noise reduction, acoustic glass and enhanced sound insulation. In terms of safety, the petrol-electric J5 will be equipped with up to 20 advanced driver assistance systems.
Launch date
Jaecoo has confirmed the J5 HEV will launch in SA in July. Local pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the launch date. However, CAR mag expects the J5 HEV will be priced around the R500k mark, which would position it above the range-topping ICE-powered J5 and below the entry-level J7.
The new-energy Jaecoo J5’s powertrain combines a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor, fed by a 1.83kWh battery. The HEV setup develops a combined system output of 165kW and 295Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission. Jaecoo claims a combined fuel consumption of 5.3L/100km and a combined range of over 1 000km. The petrol-electric J5 completes the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds (claimed), before topping out at 175km/h.
Omoda & Jaecoo and iCAUR SA national brand and marketing manager Shannon Gahagan said: “With a combined range of over 1 000km, responsive performance, and a well-appointed cabin, the J5 HEV is designed to meet the needs of modern drivers. We are confident it will resonate strongly in the South African market when it launches in July.”
