Mitsubishi updates 6th-generation Triton for SA
A performance-focused twin-turbo variant and upgraded safety suite headline the refreshed Triton range, alongside a bolder design.
As Car Magazine highlighted in Every Bakkie Confirmed for SA in 2026, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) will launch the updated Triton model range this year, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker stating that the 2026 Triton will arrive in SA in ‘the coming months’.
Here is what you can expect from the refreshed sixth-generation Triton…
Initially launched in SA in November 2024 with a 2.4-litre single-turbo diesel powertrain, arguably the most significant update to the local Triton lineup will be the introduction of a punchier twin-turbocharged unit.
The the new 2.4-litre twinturbo-diesel engine produces 150kW and 470Nm – the former and latter available from 3 500 and a low 1 500r/min, respectively. The more powerful mill is exclusively coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 4×4 drivetrain.
The Triton Bi-Turbo is distinguished from its stablemates with sportier exterior styling. The front end features a revised three-dimensional grille, wheel arches and lower bumper. L-shaped daytime-running lights sit atop three-dimensional three-piece headlamps. T-shaped taillamps can be found round back. Other exterior elements on the Triton Bi-Turbo include roof rails, a styling bar, and an assisted tailgate.
Additionally, the 2026 Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo ships as standard with Mitsubishi’s Safety Sensing suite of driver assistance systems. This includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and fore and aft parking distance sensors.
The GLS features a revised exterior styling package, with chrome trim swapped out for black accents. The fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, and tailgate handle are finished in material black. The stealthy look continues to the front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors, and 18-inch alloy wheels, all finished in metallic black.
“The Triton Bi-Turbo and updated GLS represent the next step in the brand’s commitment to delivering vehicles that have been engineered to suit both business and lifestyle applications, and which cater to customers that require versatility, capability and everyday comfort,” said Lerato Nonyane, general manager of product and marketing at MMSA.
