Boks to run England ragged?

Rassie Erasmus believes fitness will be key to victory at Twickenham tomorrow, with the Springboks able to capitalise on England’s trend of fading at the death.

Speaking in a Bok team announcement conference yesterday, Erasmus suggested that the Red Rose brigade may run out of steam trying to breach the world champions’ unrelenting defensive system.

Reflecting on recent England games, the Bok boss told reporters: “I don’t know exactly how they manage players, but England plays an energy-sapping game, and that rush defence can take a toll on them.

“They’re rushing five metres up, five metres back. If we can keep the ball, it will tire them out.”

Erasmus has shuffled the Bok line-up for this week’s clash in London, making 12 changes to his starting XV. Siya Kolisi returns as captain, while Manie Libbok partners Grant Williams at halfback.

The inclusion of Handré Pollard, Lukhanyo Am and Cobus Reinach on the bench hints at a tactical response to England’s anticipated kicking game. “They’re going to have a helluva a kicking game,” Erasmus explained.

“Steve [Borthwick] expects players to chase those kicks at 80% max. Your backline has to match that because the forwards can’t always get there.”

On Freddie Steward’s recall at fullback for England, Erasmus noted his skill in aerial contests: “Freddie is one of the best in the world. With the new directives limiting escort running, guys like him are very useful, opening a channel for tackling as they land.”
