Ocean lover to swim from Shelly Beach to Margate for National Sea Rescue Institute
Christo van Rooyen will swim about 12km to raise funds for volunteers who dedicate their time to saving lives at sea.
Ocean lover and National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) supporter Christo van Rooyen (29) is taking on a remarkable challenge later this month – swimming about 12km from Shelly Beach to Margate to raise funds for NSRI Shelly Beach.
South Coast Herald reports that the swim will take place on Saturday, with Van Rooyen setting off from the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club at 08:00 and expected to finish at Margate main beach at around 14:00.
Van Rooyen is calling on the community to come down to the finish line and support the cause by making a donation – big or small – to help the volunteers who dedicate their time to saving lives at sea.
Throughout the swim, an NSRI rescue vessel will be keeping a close watch over him, with Med-Evac on standby to ensure his safety.
“I’m praying for good weather, so I can complete this journey in support of all the volunteers who risk their lives to save others,” says Van Rooyen.
Originally from the Western Cape, Van Rooyen grew up by the ocean and has spent years volunteering with the NSRI. Having witnessed the devastation of drownings first-hand, he says the cause is deeply personal.
“This cause is close to my heart, and I am passionate about saving lives. This swim is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” he says.
