Bafana Bafana’s stars to watch

Bafana Bafana begin their world cup campaign on Thursday, with several players expected to make an early impact.

As the countdown to the Fifa World Cup 2026 begins, the spotlight turns to the emerging talent ready to make their mark on the global stage.

Key players set to carry the nation’s hopes are Teboho Mokoena from Mamelodi Sundowns, a standout midfielder for both club and country. Mokoena has been vital in the journey to the world cup, scoring crucial goals and proving he can handle the pressure of the big stage.

Oswin Appollis, currently representing Orlando Pirates, is one of the most clinical finishers in the Betway Premiership. His ability to play as both a left wing and an attacking midfielder makes him a player to watch.

Tshepang Moremi, also playing for Orlando Pirates, has proven he is a man for the weighty occasions. The former AmaZulu forward has made a massive impact in a short time, including his man-of-the-match performance in the MTN8 final and a goal in his first Soweto Derby.

Local stars performing for international teams are also ready to lead the country.

Lyle Foster, who plays for Burnley FC in England, is a former Pirates star and brings top-tier experience. National coach Hugo Broos will be keen to have his quality in the side as Foster looks to cement his role as a leading national striker.

Thapelo Maseko played for AEL Limassol this season, on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. His consistent performances have earned him a spot in the latest squad for the two upcoming international friendly matches.

With such a talented group of players finding their form, South African fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic as the countdown to the kick-off continues. Bafana Bafana open their Fifa World Cup 2026 campaign against Mexico at Mexico City Stadium on Thursday, June 11, with kick-off at 21:00.

South Africa’s last appearance at the world cup came when they hosted the tournament in 2010. This year marks their first return to the tournament via the qualifying process since 2002.
