Sun, surf and Mo’s go retro
Surfers and locals went retro to raise money for CANSA at Beach Bums.
Surfers, spectators and families came out to Beach Bums in Westbrook for the Quiksilver Off The Lip Retro Mo surf competition.
The surfing competition, organised by Quiksilver and Movember, was aimed at raising funds for CANSA and surfers had to pay R100 entrance to compete. The popular Beach Bums bar proved a perfect spot as hundreds of visitors enjoyed fair weather and some awesome retro surfing.
Competitors were required to surf on boards from the 1980’s and earlier which only had one or two fins. They were to sport a moustache and wear some contemporary clothes of the time.
Surfers were judged on slightly different criteria from a normal competition, scoring on style, creativity and originality of their tricks.
Michael February claimed the spoils at Casuarina Beach, winning a classic custom-made twin fin board designed by Peter Lawson.
Grant Baker claimed second place and Ryan Bisset came in third.
The one-of-a kind event was well supported and the initiative raised over R8 000 for CANSA.
