Cliff rescue after attempted suicide

After she landed on a small ledge rescue teams had to negotiate with the girl to prevent her from jumping again.

A dramatic rescue effort unfolded last night after a young girl allegedly threw herself off a cliff in Mapumulo.

The 17-year-old girl landed on a small ledge about 175m from the top, and threatened to jump again should anyone attempt to rescue her.

A fall of another 200m awaited her below.

The Ballito-based Specialised Rescue Unit and SAPS Search and Rescue worked together preparing safety harnesses and additional ropes, should the girl jump a second time.

After a 30 minute negotiation Sargent Kotze made the climb down the cliff. Once he had secured the girl they were hauled up.  To everyones disbelief the girl had only sustained small scratches.
