Golf that gives Hope
An incredible R850 000 for the Ingami Yami Children’s village.
Some of the world’s top sportsmen teed off at the Simbithi Country Club for the Hope Cup on Monday.
2011 Master’s winner Charl Schwartzel and former golf pro Peter Matkovich helped bring in some of the sport’s biggest names for the second consecutive year.
This included former Protea cricketers Shaun Pollock and Dale Benkenstein, current Protea cricketer David Miller, golf pros Darren Clarke, Tommy Fleetwood, Thomas Aitken and Darren Fichardt to name but a few.
The Cup, organised by the Kloof Harvest Church, was a fundraising initiative for the Ingami Yami Children’s village near Shongweni.
The pros were paired up with invited guests to raise funds for the orphans that call Ingami Yami home.
Schwartzel, who co-hosted the event, was full of praise for the children’s village.
“Today is a special day as we are giving these children a chance in life, to see what the village is doing is really phenomenal. To set aside a day like this to help these kids is really appreciated,” said Schwartzel.
This year’s Hope Cup raised around R850 000 for the village, which outdid last year’s total of R700 000.
The village is in the early stages of its life and currently houses eight orphaned children. Five homes have been built since the land was bought in 2009 and each house will hold six children and a house mother.
The orphans are given a chance to rebuild their lives and will call Ingami Yami home until they are young adults.
There are plans to build 20 new homes once the original ones are full.
“We want to get this cluster right and then take it from there,” said Kloof Harvest Church pastor Scott Hamilton.
“Kloof Harvest’s founding pastors, Roger and Yvonne Greig, are the custodians of the home and it was their vision that got the ball rolling,” he said.
The winning fourball was comprised of renowned caddy Mike Kerr, Anthony Bolton, Glen Parsons and Marius Els.
Charl Schwartzel and his fourball of Daniel Nathan, Adam Solomon and David Lever came in second and the 20 year-old pro golfer Brandon Stone, CJ Porter, Mike Pohl, Jason Sharmen came in third.
