“You must be disciplined”

Hlelizwe Mhlongo praised the team for behaving well throughout the season and their chairman, Mdu Tony for his leadership.

The importance of discipline and a positive attitude towards sport was the message outlined by all speakers at the Nkobongo Madrid soccer team awards.

Speaking at the Oxygen night club in Shakaskraal on Sunday, Ilembe South African Football Association president, Hlelizwe Mhlongo emphasised that drugs and alcohol will never be a good influence on a soccer player.

“Even if you do drink, make sure that your coach never catches wind of it and you don’t miss training and game time. That will also help you to grow as a decent and responsible citizen. It starts now not later,” said Mhlongo.

He praised the team for behaving well throughout the season and their chairman Mdu Tony for his leadership.

“I did not receive any negative reports about the team and I must acknowledge Tony for taking the initiative to start a team. It is not an easy task, it requires lots of time and money. I urge his players not to let him down and that can be done by obeying their coach, Ajipha Ntamila’s, instructions on the field,” said Mhlongo.

Madrid ended the SAB league in fourth position, playing for the first time in the league.

Tony was delighted with the result.

“What thrills me is that all our players are local boys. The club was founded to ensure that boys in our township are given a chance to take part in sport and stay off the streets. I am happy about the way they have played and I hope for better results next season,” said Tony.

Lucky Gabela walked away with the player of the season award, Sihle Pityo gabbed top goal scorer and Melusi was crowned the most improved player. Goalkeeper of the season was Nhlanhla Mpungose, best defender was Teddy Mkhize and best midfielder, Snethemba “Brimo” Zulu.
