Dolphins close off the season in style
Coach Craig Dawson was beaming after the entertaining encounter as the Great Railroad Brewing Company Ballito Dolphins finished the season on a high note.
The Great Railroad Brewing Company Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club finished the season with their biggest league win for many years, a 71/0 thrashing of UKZN.
Coach Craig Dawson was beaming after the entertaining encounter saying the side had been threatening all season to click together as a cohesive team with the ability to put a big score on the board, and Saturday showed the well supported team indeed had the capability.
With a half time score of 26/0 the second half became a lesson in explosive running rugby for the depleted and deflated UKZN team. The Dolphins running in a further six unanswered tries in cold, windy and testing conditions. Try scorers were Anthony Fivaz taking the match ball with three tries, Kenny Granney (2), Moses Mpande (2), Zam Mthembu (2), Chris Ankar (1) and Carter Dube (1). Jack Severs converted eight tries for a personally tally of 16 points.
The season has seen The Ballito Dolphins finish fifth in the league, one point behind PMB Collegians and missing out on the Murray Cup knockout tournament by that solidarity point despite a far superior points difference and tries for total. That said, compared to where the team was for the last two previous seasons, bottom of the standings and not recording a win for 23 games, the players can be proud that they have put the Dolphins firmly back on the map in first division rugby in KZN and are definitely a team for the future.
The Junior section has also come on in leaps and bounds after not being functional for over three years, to being the second and third rated teams in various junior age groups. The future is bright and Ballito Dolphins Chairman Kevin Murphy said were thrilled with the public support received throughout the season.
“The Dolphins would like to publicly thank all their sponsors, the people of Ballito for their fantastic support, the coaches for giving up their time free of charge and The Great Railroad Brewing Company for being their primary sponsor this last season. With One heart One beat we always give our all,” said Murphy.
