Walking down Mulberry Street with Shakaskraal actor Keshan Chetty

Released nationwide on June 28 the comedy, Kings of Mulberry Street, is already gaining momentum amoung Indian cinema fans.

Shakaskraal’s upcoming actor Keshan Chetty has found his first stepping stone to stardom with his role in the much anticipated South African movie, Kings of Mulberry Street.

Shot in Tongaat and Verulam the movie is a vibrant and hilarious film that brings together the rich and colourful world of the Indian community in the 80s as well as Bollywood cinema and songs from that era.

The 30 year old local actor plays the character of Size, a bodyguard to the notorious bully and crime lord, Raja.

The plot for Kings of Mulberry Street centre’s around young boys Ticky and Baboo who are on a mission to defeat Raja through their belief that anyone can be a Bollywood hero.

“Although it was my first time casting for a movie, it was a fun learning experience for me. I enjoyed every minute,” said Chetty.

“Size is totally different from me, I mean, the man is mean, even to children and I love children. The two boys who are the main characters were so lovable, I just wanted to play games with them instead,” said Chetty.

After his studies, Chetty, began working for video production company iTen Entertainment, where he featured in numerous corporate and viral brand and product videos, playing a variety of characters. He said his work has had more than a million views combined across all social media platforms.

“I actually began my acting career while studying at film school AFDA in 2013, featuring in minor and supporting roles for student productions. However, I never thought I would end up in front of a camera. My dream is to be behind the camera, producing and directing,” said Chetty.

The plot for Kings of Mulberry Street centre’s around young boys Ticky and Baboo who are on a mission to defeat Raja through their belief that anyone can be a Bollywood hero.

Ticky is like an artful dodger – cheeky and daring with a streetwise swagger and little respect for rules. He escapes the realities of his 80’s Sugarhill District existence by living in a Bollywood dream world where he’s an unbeatable action hero.

When chubby, timid Baboo moves into the neighbourhood with his snooty, academic dad, Ticky thinks he’s the biggest loser he’s ever seen – but soon the two boys are drawn together by the shared threat. The crime lord is threatening their families.

The resulting battle between escapism and harsh reality is not evenly matched, yet these heroes share a loyalty so special that it can conquer all.

Keshan Chetty hopes to one day not just act in but direct movies too.
