25 years of baking bliss for Mister Biscuit

Now situated at Canton Park in Shaka's Head since 2015, Mister Biscuit has grown from producing 300kgs of biscuits a day to a whopping 1 600kgs a day!

While money does not buy you happiness, baking biscuits since 1996 has put food on the table for the Singh family, put their children through school and a smile on the face of Mister Biscuit owner, Naren Singh.

Reminiscing over the history of the wholesale biscuit business, Naren, better known throughout the North Coast as ‘Mr Biscuit’ said he recalled all those years ago when his daughter and son, Atisha and Vishaal were 10 and 12, and the family stood on the edge of uncertainty as the franchise they had bought into had opted to dissolve.

Naren said they owed their survival in the biscuit-baking industry to God first, with credit for the backbone of the business going to Simla, Naren’s wife of 39 years as they celebrate 25 years in business.

After starting with only one oven, one cutter, a mixer, cooler and 2 tables, the business has continued to grow since it first opened on the corner of Watson Highway and Arbee Drive in Tongaat in 1996.

In the early days Naren and Simla handled everything themselves from orders to baking and delivery, and today they have grown the staff complement of 6 to an astounding 29.

With major contracts throughout the province, 19 years of experience in the industry working side-by-side with his wife, and 2 children raised in the wholesale industry to back them up, the future is clear for this biscuit-baking family with plans of expansion in the pipeline.

Naren said his staff deserved credit for the way they pulled together to keep going during lockdown.

They worked in split teams during lockdown level 5, when day and night shifts were started to keep up with demand.

This team effort is what saw to the business picking up several new major contracts, said Naren.

“God has always been good to us. We continue to grow day by day and I believe we are heading places with Him by our side,” he said.

With 15 flavors in their line-up of delicious biscuits, shortbread, crunchie and chocolate chip remain the top three flavors, said Naren.

“And it’s been this way since we first started baking biscuits.”
