For 72 years, Northlands Girls’ High School (NGHS) has been educating young women for a fulfilling and successful life, offering first class facilities, stimulating programmes and inspirational initiatives.

The school is well known for its academic excellence.

The class of 2021 produced superb results, achieving a 91.2% Bachelors degree pass rate.

Top matric student awards included 1st in the district (2020), 7th in the district (2017), 9th in KZN and 3rd and 6th in the district (2015); 5th in KZN (2014), 4th and 8th in the district (2014); 2nd in the District (2010) and 1st in KZN (2006).

Maintaining high standards and quality education, NGHS has been recognised as an Allan Gray Orbis Foundation ‘Circle of Excellence’ school for eight consecutive years.

The Circle of Excellence network is a foundation initiative that celebrates and promotes the development of holistic educational excellence in South Africa.

Launched in 2008, this initiative aims to identify and celebrate South Africa’s top high schools for their consistent delivery of successful candidates to the Fellowship Programme.

The programme seeks to develop students, known as Allan Gray Candidate Fellows, into southern Africa’s future high impact responsible entrepreneurs.

NGHS is extremely proud of this achievement.

At NGHS, learners are exposed to 24 academic subjects, including music, IEB French and advanced programme mathematics.

Facilities include fully equipped and state-of-the-art music, media and art centres, consumer studies kitchens and a modern gymnasium, swimming pool and astro turf, ensuring a first class high school career.

Outside the classroom, learners grow on the sportsfields and in the more than 20 arts and culture societies on offer.

As they become involved in the school’s innovative leadership, community service and environmental programmes, they grow into well-rounded, strong women.

The arts are such a vital component of modern education, but their value is often underestimated.

According to Northlands dramatic arts teacher Amy Barnard, subjects such as drama, art and music provide learners with valuable life skills.

“They teach creativity, innovation, communication skills, appreciation for other cultures and foster a sense of community,” she said.

“The life skills they are taught transcend schooling and filter into their development and future careers. The personal growth we witness is the most heartwarming part of teaching the arts for me, watching a shy learner becoming a confident leader is the greatest reward I can receive.”

Barnard’s department offers three arts subjects up to matric, which are supported by dedicated and talented teachers and first grade facilities.

“We also have a variety of extramural cultural activities which we were able to continue with throughout the pandemic.

“In a society isolated for a long time by the pandemic, I see culture as an opportunity to help learners embrace the ‘new normal’. They have been using the medium of art and performance to express their frustrations and disappointments and therefore have been able to deal with all the changes constructively and with understanding,” said Barnard.
