Umdloti’s Hamish Lovemore wins silver at Canoe Sprint World Championships
Lovemore produced a powerful late surge to claim K1 5 000m silver in Poland.
Umdloti’s Hamish Lovemore came from behind to win a silver medal at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Poznan, Poland, last weekend.
The 27-year-old entered the final stretch of the K1 5 000m event at the back of a four-paddler pack, but made up two places with a powerful sprint to claim a place on the podium.
One of the paddlers he overtook was Denmark’s Mads Pedersen, with whom Lovemore has developed a friendly rivalry over the past few years, making the silver all the sweeter.
Portugal’s Fernando Pimenta held on for the win in 24:15.72, ensuring Lovemore, who finished less than two seconds back, matched his result from the same event last year.
Lovemore also won the B Final of the K1 1 000m event after missing out on the A Final in a particularly tough semi-final.
South Africa’s two other athletes competing in Poland, Bridgitte Hartley and Esti Olivier, did not win medals.
