Giving pre-loved items a second chance in Umhlali
Owner Penny Dudley, who bought Second Chance in November 2016, says local employment and skills development were integral to her outlook.
One can hardly make mention of Umhlali without referring to Second Chance, one of the town’s longest lasting and most popular stores.
Now split between 3 separate storefronts within Umhlali Village, Second Chance offers a wide range of items – from clothing to furniture – while operating with a community-first business model.
Owner Penny Dudley, who bought Second Chance in November 2016, says local employment and skills development were integral to her outlook.
“As a business we reflect on the needs of the community. This extends beyond straightforward employment and we attempt to uplift as many of the surrounding community members as we can,” she said.
This ethos manifests in development programmes in which underprivileged residents learn functional restoration skills in the Second Chance workshop and other community outreach initiatives.
High quality pre-loved items and clothing at a fraction of normal cost also ensure impoverished residents can live with dignity.
“We try and help wherever we can. Often this means helping with school shoes and clothes that will be suitable for job interviews.”
The business works as both a buyer and reseller of items, while also maintaining a refurbishment workshop where once-loved goods can find a ‘second chance’.
Second Chance has something for buyers of all income levels and you are bound to find a hidden gem while perusing its many aisles.
