A report of the crime on the North Coast during the week from Umhlali SAPS.

During the week, Umhlali SAPS responded to a number of crimes on the North Coast.

House break-ins have been on the increase throughout Umhlali SAPS’s district.

On Monday night computers were stolen from offices on Garlicke Drive while a tuck shop was burgled in Shakaskraal. A house was broken into in Nkobongo and a vehicle was stolen in Mbuyazi, Police recovered the car and arrested two suspects.

On Tuesday afternoon a man was caught stealing metal from the railway station near Shakaskraal. Just down the road on the R102 near Umhlali SAPS, a pedestrian was hit by a reckless driver. A suspect was arrested.

Late on Tuesday night two house break-ins were reported, one on Madeleine Drive and the other on Cecila Close. Televisions and other items were stolen from both homes.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning a taxi driver woke up to find his taxi on fire in Shakashead after hearing a gun shot outside his home. The same morning a guard was robbed by an armed thief while on duty at Pinnacle Park. A business in the same premises had computers, plasma screens and servers valued at R70 000 stolen during the same evening.

A Ballito resident was informed that his car was stolen along with household items on Wednesday evening. The suspect was sleeping and did not know that he had been burgled.

An office at The Circle was broken into and a laptop, camera, projector and a cellphone were stolen.

In cases that could well be connected, two armed men stole R4500 from a woman in her home in Shayamoya on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, two men entered a house in Etete while the resident was inside and stole cash and a cellphone. On the same day, two men stole a firearm, cash and a cellphone from a house near the same area.

Just a day after that, two men broke into a house, stole possessions and held up a mother and her two daughters before taking one of the girls to an empty house outside and raping her.

As the holiday season draws near, people are urged to be safety conscious and to make sure their homes and belongings are secured.
