Umhlali K9s nab suspects

Seven suspects were arrested in connection with a business robbery.

Umhlali’s K9 unit, with the aid of security intelligence officers, apprehended seven suspects south of Durban on Tuesday, December 10, wanted in connection with business robbery.

Five of the suspects were arrested in Umlazi and were found with a Ford Fiesta that was allegedly used to escape the scene of the robbery.

The joint operation then travelled to Creighton to arrest the sixth suspect, who was found to be in possession of ten bags of marijuana. The seventh suspect was apprehended in the same area and was in possession of a 7.65mm pistol. He was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The operation ran from Tuesday evening until Wednesday afternoon and the seven suspects, aged between 20 and 40, appeared in the Ixopo court yesterday.

The arrests were made in connection with a business robbery that took place on November 17. A woman was locking up her business premises at the Creighton Hotel at around 9.30 pm, when four men held her up at gunpoint.

The suspects then demanded cash from the safe, stealing an undisclosed amount of money and liquor, before fleeing from the scene. The victim was not injured in the incident.

Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, commended the joint operation for its swift action in taking the suspects into custody.

“These arrests once again reaffirms my statement that the strong partnership that was forged between police, business and security companies prior to the start of the festive season is bearing fruit. We once again call on all role-players to work in an integrated manner so that we can turn the tide of crime,” she said.
