Cop in court for colleague’s murders

Memorial service held in honour of slain officers.

The KwaDukuza SAPS officer accused of arranging the murders of two young policemen seemed calm during his first court appearance.

Lieutenant colonel Tholumuzi Mokoena (53) made a short appearance in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

He is suspected of arranging the ambush that saw constables Thobani Xulu and Sbusiso Mthethwa murdered outside Stanger early on Saturday morning.

Mokoena was in the vehicle with the constables and one other officer, on the R74 at around 1.30am when they stopped to investigate a red vehicle parked on the side of the road.

It is believed that three unknown men emerged from the bush and opened fire on the vehicle. The constable and student constable seated in the front of the vehicle were killed as the men opened fire on them.

A memorial service was held in honour of the two constables at the Ilembe Auditorium in Stanger yesterday. Colleagues and provincial SAPS officers, as well as family members, paid tribute.

Mokoena will make his next appearance on February 13.
