Police charge two men hiding firearms, with attempted murder

Two men aged 31 and 39 were arrested in a Lamontville hostel and charged with attempted murder.

Provincial Crime Intelligence and the Umhlali K9 unit conducted an operation last night at about 10pm in Wema hostel, Lamontville and seized three unlicensed firearms, an AK 47 and two pistols.

An assortment 64 live rounds of ammunition were also recovered.

Police went to the hostel following a tip-off that there were men hiding firearms there.

When police arrived at the suspect’s room, they heard the cocking firearms.

A shoot-out ensued and one suspect sustained injuries. The suspect’s girlfriend sustained injuries and was taken to hospital where she died.

Two men aged 31 and 39 were arrested and charged with attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, inquest, possession of unlicensed firearms and live rounds of ammunition at Montclair SAPS.

The recovered firearms will be taken to ballistics to ascertain if they were used in the commission of the other crimes in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police officers for the recovery the unlicensed firearms.

“The suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases committed in the province,” she said.
