Cop injured in Maphumulo shoot-out

Police were conducting an operation to combat the rapid increase of illegal firearms

A police officer was shot in the arm when police were set upon during an early morning raid in Maphumulo on Thursday.

SAPS Ilembe Cluster Task Team and Empangeni Public Order Police were conducting an operation to combat the rapid increase of illegal firearms, a 44-year-old man was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with six live rounds of ammunition.

The man’s brother then fired shots at the police who retaliated.

The shooter was also shot in the ankle.

Both men were taken to hospital.

The 44-year-old was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and his injured brother will be charged for attempted murder.

They will appear in the Maphumulo Magistrates’ Court and the seized firearm will be subjected for ballistics testing.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the police on the operation.

“Similar operations will continue in our province to root-out the spread of illegal firearms.”
